Dambulla will be your base for exploring Sri Lanka. Today we’ll take a day trip to Anuradhapura, which was the country’s capital for over 1000 years and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your visit will take you to many ancient places, including the twin towns of Anuradhapura and Mihintale.
Today we’ll begin with a visit to one of the most majestic sites of the entire trip, the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. The climb to the top is an exhilarating experience. Later we’ll go on an excursion to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa.
On the way to Kandy we’ll stop at the Dambulla Cave Temples, which overlook a scenic vista of sprawling tea plantations. Then we’ll head to the holy Temple of the Sacred Tooth, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Kandy is an ancient city nestled amongst hills and home to some spectacular places, including the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. We’ll also explore many of the city’s other beautiful monuments.
Kandy – NuwaraEliya
We’ll travel by train today, on an incredibly scenic 4 hour journey to Nanuoya. From there we’ll drive to Nuwara Eliya. Once there we’ll visit a tea factory and see first hand how the leaves are turned into tea, and of course get to taste some of the local brews.
We’ll spend another day in Nuwara Eliya, as its scenic beauty is worth more than a short visit. This laid back town is best explored on foot. The highlight of the area is a walking tour of the serene tea plantations. You’ll get a unique opportunity to enjoy nature’s bounties and soak in the fresh forest air.
NuwaraEliya – Yala National Park
Head east for Yala National Park. A long but memorable journey, it will take the better part of the day but the gorgeous views will make it seem like it went by in a minute. In the evening we’ll go on a jungle safari and discover the radiant natural beauty of the Yala National Park.
Yala National Park
Today is devoted solely to safaris. We’ll jump in a jeep for both a morning and afternoon excursion into the jungle. You are likely to see spotted deer, wild boar and herds of elephants, in addition to a wide variety of tropical birds. And the icing on the cake, with an average of one Leopard per square kilometer, Yala has the highest density of these majestic cats in Asia, making it the best place in the continent to spot one.
Yala to Galle
Take a drive down the south coast towards Galle. You may see the iconic stilt fishermen plying their trade in the ocean. Upon arrival we’ll visit the historic Sithuvili Art Gallery, followed by a truly traditional dinner at the home of a local family.
After an early morning visit to Mirissa we’ll spend the rest of the day roaming around the colonial area of Galle. Located on the southern tip of Sri Lanka, Galle is the most important port on the island. You’re free to explore the city however you’d like to.
Galle has a lot to offer, especially in its surrounding waters. Today you may take a leisurely boat ride to enjoy the coastal vistas, or if you’d prefer to continue explore the city’s rich cultural history you can wander its streets and visit its monuments.
Our final day in Galle, make the most of it. Perhaps visit the famous Galle Lighthouse, or the colonial Portugese Fort. There’s never a dull moment in this fascinating coastal city.
The journey comes to an end. On your flight home, reminisce about the many magical moments you experienced over the last two weeks, and look forward to your next trip back to this incredible country.
